There are more than seventy communicable diseases that must be reported to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH). The public health nurses provide follow-up investigations for reported, confirmed cases and offer counseling and education. For information on health topics and diseases visit, www.cdc.gov

The public health nurses also work with the school nurses and families to assist with detection and prevention of the spread of lice. The public health nurses respond to many phone calls providing information and education on lice prevention and treatment.

BCMH is a state-administered program through the ODH. This program provides financial assistance to eligible families who have children (under age 21) with special health care needs. BCMH also offers diagnostic opportunities, regardless of family income, to children with suspected medically handicapping conditions. The public health nurses, act as an advocate for the child/family by helping to identify children who qualify, assure referrals are being made to appropriate physicians, and facilitate linkage to community resources. www.odh.state.oh.us Under ODH Programs

Marion City Health Department provides services to families of children with lead poisoning. These services include education regarding lead exposure and general measures to identify and reduce lead hazards.

Your child may be at risk for lead poisoning. Does your child…

  • Live in or regularly visit a house built before 1950?
  • Live in or visit a house that has peeling, chipping, dusting or chalking paint?
  • Live in or visit a house built before 1978 with recent, ongoing or planned renovation/remodeling?
  • Have a sibling or playmate that has or did have lead poisoning?
  • Frequently come in contact with an adult who has a hobby or works with lead? Examples are construction, welding, pottery, painting, and casting ammunition.

A blood lead level is indicated if the answer to any question is positive. Call the Marion City Health Department for more information.

The public health nurses are available daily either by phone or walk-in to provide education, recommendations and referrals for city residents. Requests are received from various sources such as residents, physicians and social service agencies. Educational presentations are also offered by the nursing staff upon request.

The Stand For Children Team is a nonpartisan organization comprised of representatives from Marion County service agencies that have been active since 1997. In addition to advocating on behalf of children, the organization also sponsors the Cents for Shoes program. The Cents for Shoes program provides a $20 voucher to any school-aged child attending a Marion City or County school who is in need of shoes. Children are referred to the program by teachers, principals, counselors, caseworkers, childcare workers, and others from our member agencies. The children can be referred to the program once every 6 months. This program has been supported financially through grants from some of our member agencies as well as many fundraisers throughout the year. Local groups, businesses, churches, and people also contribute to the Cents for Shoes program. If you are interested in donating, please call (740) 387-3604 and ask to speak with a nurse. More information is available on the Stand for Children website at www.stand.org

All of the Marion county birth and death certificates are filed in the Vital Statistics office at the City Health Department. Over the past two years, the Vital Statistics department has been working towards computerizing its records. This is a large task considering the department has records dating all the way back to December 1908. Nevertheless, the department is committed to computerizing the records in an effort to make the process of retrieving records more efficient and easier.
